Drosophila Species Drosophila bipectinata
Drosophila bipectinata is a member of the melanogaster species group (ananassae subgroup) within the Sophophora subgenus.
Drosophila bipectinata is a tropical and urban species that occurs in South East Asia, Melanesia and Australia. In Australia it has been recorded between Thursday Island (Queensland) and Townsville (Queensland) along the East coast.
Drosophila bipectinata and other species of the ananassae subgroup have been used as a model in speciation and sexual selection research.
The genome of this species is in the process of being sequenced as part of the "Adaptation to climate change research project", which is funded by a Science & Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) Research grant.
