Scaptodrosophila lativittata is a member of the coracina species group (lativittata species complex).

This species is endemic to Australia and is a widespread and urban species. It has been recorded between Atherton (Queensland) and Launceston (Tasmania) along the East coast. Little is known about this species.

The genome of this species is in the process of being sequenced as part of the "Adaptation to climate change research project", which is funded by a Science & Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) Research grant.
