Drosophila Species Drosophila sulfurigaster

Summary

Drosophila sulfurigaster is a member of the immigrans species group (nasuta subgroup) within the Drosophila subgenus.

This species occurs in the rainforests of South East Asia, Melanesia and Australia. In Australia it has been recorded along the East coast between Moa Island (Queensland) and Sydney (New South Wales) and there is evidence that it is expanding its range.

Drosophila sulfurigaster has been used as a model species in a few evolutionary studies in particular to address phylogenetic questions.

The genome of this species is in the process of being sequenced as part of the "Adaptation to climate change research project", which is funded by a Science & Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) Research grant.
